I held Jinxx's hand for a second longer, gazing into his eyes. Jinxx looked back at me, his head slightly tilted to the side. My stomach began to twist with butterflies, in the end it was I who had to break his gaze. Jinxx smiled at me, a low chuckle coming from deep within his chest.
"I never knew you were so girly, Ash." He grinned.
I felt the blood rush to my face. " I am not girly!" I said furiously.
The smile slipped from Jinxx's face. "Calm down Ash." He elbowed me in the ribs. "I was only joking. You're the manliest man of all."
I took my hand from his and folded them across my chest. "Humph!" I turned away from him and walked towards the stairs.
"Oh, come on Ash!" He chased after me, grabbing me by the elbow, successfully stopping me. "Don't be mad!"
I continued to ignore Jinxx, not because I was mad. I mean, okay, I was a little mad. But because I looked like a girl, I had developed a girlish side. I tended to care more about my appearance than most guys, I often spoke with my hands, and even some of my body movements were similar to a girl's. Long ago I had accepted this, but it still stung to have him point it out. Anyways, I wasn't ignoring him for calling me girly, I merely wanted to see how much I could get away with.
"Ash, I'm sorry." Jinxx pleaded, he darted in front of me every time I turned away. "Okay, Ashley. Enough of this!" He reached up, grabbed the sides of my face and pulled me down towards him.
Jinxx kissed me angrily, our mouths melding together. The fierceness of his mouth against mine was enough to make me gasp, he took it as opportunity to slip his tongue into my mouth. I felt my knees go weak and had to grab onto his shoulders to stop myself from falling, still, I stumbled back until I bumped into the railing. Jinxx clutched the front of my vest, my hands met behind his neck, holding him in place. When we finally pulled apart, we were both gasping for breath.
"Are you still mad?" Jinxx asked, though from the smug tone of his voice, I knew he wasn't worried.
"After that, no." I smiled at him, he grinned back.
Seconds later, I felt a prickling in the back of head, the hairs on my arms stood up. It was almost like I was...no, I shook my head and immediately put the thought out of my head, there was no way in a secluded garden like this.
"Hey." Jinxx said quietly, noticing my change in mood. "You okay?"
"Um...yeah, can we go? I'm sure we're being missed at the party."
I hopped off the railing and let him guide us back towards the party. Somewhere along the way, we started shoving each other around and we emerged from the shadows laughing and stumbling almost drunkenly.
"Hey!" A chorus of voices shouted from somewhere to our right.
There was a Batman, a Slenderman, and a Phantom of the Opera. The Batman should have given it away, but it took me a moment to realize it was Andy, CC, and Jake.
"Ay! Where have ya been!" CC shouted, and held up a cup of what was surely whiskey, or vodka, or perhaps some other liquor.
"Yeah, where have you guys been?" Jake asked, a tight smile on his lips.
"Just looking around." I said quickly. "Where's Juliet?" I asked Andy, changing the subject.
"She was around here...I wonder where she went off to..." He mumbled and looked around.
"Boo!" A Catwoman leapt out from behind Andy and landed on his back.
"There you are babe!" Andy, turned around with Juliet still clinging to his back. "Where'd you go?"
"I went to see if they had anything besides fancy cheese and crackers." She said, jumping off his back and kissing him on her tiptoes.
"Aw man, enough of this mushy shit!" CC shouted. "Lauren, where are you baby!" CC looked around, and stumbled a few steps away from us.
I turned to Jake and raised an eyebrow quizzically. He folded his three center fingers, leaving his thumb and pinky sticking out, then tipped his thumb toward his mouth in an imitation of a bottle. I nodded, that was totally like CC.
"Jinxx!" A honey-like voice called from the throng of people. He looked around looking for the source.
Sammi appeared from the center of the crowd. Her pale skin glowing, curls bouncing, and blue dress swaying from side-to-side as she walked towards us. Sammi smiled at the guys and Juliet before moving to stand beside Jinxx, she held his arm with both of her hands.
The guys stared at Sammi, mouths agape. Only Juliet seemed obvious to the tension.
"What are you all staring at?" She asked, her blue lips turning into a frown.
"Well..." Andy began.
"Jinxx told us you'd gotten divorced." Jake finished.
I saw her hold on Jinxx's arm tighten, and in return, saw Jinxx's jaws clench in pain.
"He did? Sadly, it's true, but there's no bad blood between us, is there Jinxx?"
"Nope, none at all." He managed to put on a smile.
"Alrighty then!" Andy said enthusiastically.
Things were quiet for a moment, it had gotten awkward. Except for CC, who was of course drunk out of his mind, hollering for Lauren and singing incoherently. Juliet had remained quiet during the encounter, but things had gotten too much for her to handle.
"Come on Andy, let's go dance." She tugged on his cape and led him away.
Jake, stood awkwardly for a second, rocking on his heels. "Yeah, I'm gonna go too!" He mumbled, and walked away quickly.
Now, it was only CC, Sammi, Jinxx, and I. Until CC decided he needed to puke.
"Um, guysh, I need...I need to go, find Lauren..." He clutched his stomach. "No, wait...I need to..." I slapped his hand across his mouth and ran off, tripping over his own feet.
With everybody gone, Sammi glared freely at Jinxx.
"You told them!" She hissed. "Why!"
"I didn't know it was supposed to be a secret." Jinxx replied, his voice cold as ice. "Now, where are the papers. You said you'd sign them tonight."
"Why so eager to get rid of me?" She hissed. "You act as if I'm some terrible monster." Sammi grinned wildly, her eyes wild.
"Sammi, you are cruel. You are terrible, and inhumane. Incapable of remorse. You are a monster. I made a huge mistake in marrying you, and I want my freedom."
Shaking with anger, she leaned in close to his face. "Tonight" she hissed through clenched teeth. "You'll get them tonight, after one last dance. Then you shall be free of me."
Jinxx nodded stiffly. Then Sammi turned to me, her eyes flashing. "And you! Don't think I don't know about you! Both of you, you sick little perverts!" With that, she regained her composure, and sashayed into the crowd. I glanced at Jinxx, he was shaking with anger. I took his hand and gave it a squeeze. Somehow, it would be alright...I hoped.
"Nights in white satin, never reaching the end, letters I've written, never meaning to send." The female began the last song of the night.
From under the shadow of the tree, I saw Jinxx and Sammi walk to the center of the dance floor. Jinxx took her hand and slowly led her in a circle. She leaned in and whispered into his ear. A smile appeared on his face, he took her by the waist and lifted her up. Sammi extended her legs and arms, her golden hair swirling around her face. People stared at the beautiful couple. He set her down again, and Sammi resumed her dancing, legs moving rapidly but fluidly, swirling and twirling around Jinxx.
"'Cause I love you, yes, I love you, oh, how, I love you. Gazing at people, some hand in hand, just what I'm going through, they can understand. Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend, just what you want to be, you will be in the end. And I love you, yes, I love you, oh, how, I love you. Oh, how, I love you"
Seeing them, they really did make a perfect couple. They moved harmoniously, hypnotizing the crowd with their elegant movements. At last, the song started to end. Jinxx stood in the center while Sammi raised her hands over her head once more, black filmy ribbons had been tied to her wrist, as she twirled around Jinxx, the ribbons lifted around her hands, creating a spinning helix.
"'Cause I love you, yes, I love you, oh, how, I love you. Oh, how, I love you..."
The singer's voice drifted to a stop, Sammi stopped, her legs crossed, head tilted downwards, eyes closed, and arms poised above her head. There was a moment of silence before the spell over the crowd was broken, they cheered loudly. Sammi looked up, smiling brightly, in that moment, she was a totally different. I could see the light radiating from within her, the light Jinxx had mentioned. I understood how he had been drawn to her, I turned away, then there was whistling and hooting. I looked up to see Jinxx holding Sammi by the waist. She had her arms laced behind his neck, and their lips where locked together.
I felt as though ice water had been poured over me. I was frozen in place, I was seeing it, literally in front of my face, but my brain couldn't comprehend it. My lover, my boyfriend, kissing the woman who had caused him so much pain. How could this be? I took a deep breath and walked through the crowd of people. As I got closer to the couple, I saw Jinxx's shoulders were shaking, and light was sparkling on his cheeks. Tears? As I passed behind him, I brushed his shoulder with mine, then walked out of the grand house.
When I arrived home, I found myself feeling lost. Like the day of the accident, I gazed around my dark home, then climbed up to my room. I stripped out of my clothes and changed into an oversized t-shirt and boxer-briefs. Why am I feeling so empty? I thought as I closed the curtains around my bed so that I was in complete darkness. I wrapped myself in my blanket and took out my iPod. Scrolling through several artist, I finally came to the one that would put my sadness into words. TRAUMA DEVILLE.
"I walk down the road no one goes, under a blood red sky, was it fate, we may never know, I owe you my whole life..." His voice lulled me to sleep as I wiped tears from my eyes.
